Korean tournament

September 2016

Buan was an interesting place for a go tournament.  There was a children’s go tournament there just before our tournament.

The hotel was 40 minutes drive from the playing venue and can be seen in this photo through the trumpet.

The tournament venue was a nature reserve

My result was 3 from 6 and 29th out of 54.  This was about what I expected, but the way it happened not so much.

Day 1. Two wins and one a good win against a strong European 3 dan (overall happy)

Day 2. Two losses in games in which I had my chances against strong opponents.  The first game was recorded and will be shown on TV along with a strange interview.  (overall not too dissatisfied, but ruing the missed chances)

Day3. A loss to someone I should give stones to and almost lost to a 2 Kyu. (a disastrous day really)

Australian online go tournament 5th game tonight

So far I am 3 from 4, but tonight’s game (27 July 2016) may be tough.  Billy Sun is ranked 6 dan.  He is probably weaker than Kevin, but I have never got close to beating Kevin.

If I could win tonight then I probably would play Kevin next.  That assumes that Kevin beats Ken.

UPDATE: The game went quite well, except that I got into a fight which I lost due to a misreading.  I probably could have lived if I had noticed the flaw earlier as I had probe options that could have remedied it in sente.

Australian go tournament – second game

Played last night (8 July 2916) against Gongsu Chen.  Boy am I rusty!

https://online-go.com/api/v1/games/5765044/sgf

I had chances to get a really good game and blew them.  Instead of taking the easy route, I tried something complicated and got a terrible result.  Then instead of playing the move I read out, I changed my mind at the last minute and thought I could put in a forcing move.  Early resignation

My opponent was too strong to play that badly and expect to have a chance.  Next game I will try to do better.

Go activity

With the invitation to go to the Korean tournament this year, it is time to resurrect my interest in go.  I don’t expect to get back to my best, but I need to make a decent account of myself.

So I will take part in the Australia-New Zealand online tournament starting this week. http://digital.go.org.au/2016.html

My first game is tonight against TriDat Tran from Australia.

UPDATE: In spite of being rusty I managed a win.  A new opponent will be assigned tomorrow (Sunday 3 July).
